Sistan Baluchistan School Project

Background

Due to the geographical condition of Sistan-Baluchestan and the large population distribution, the region has the lowest educational coverage in the country and the highest proportion of illiteracy. Lack of sufficient number of schools in populated areas, especially in rural areas, is one of the leading reasons for this. The province also has the lowest rate in schools per capital in the country. The Yari Foundation wants to help solve this challenge by building a school in a strategically chosen area and thus enabling thousands of children to receive the education they are entitled to.

After a major investigation, we have chosen the Lashar area and the village of Kahiri for the school project. The survey has shown that by building a larger boarding school, we will be able to enable more children from more villages to go to school. Our preliminary study has also indicated that this may have implicit positive effects in the region as it would mean a higher degree of coordination between the villages, an exchange that we believe will benefit the region as a whole. We have also assessed that since girls are most vulnerable and take the greatest risks when they go to and from school, that the school should be a school for girls only.

Where & Why?

By establishing the school in Kahiri, we reach an area that stretches 200km in an east-west direction and covers an area of ‚Äč‚Äč6,530 square kilometers with a population of about 50,000 people. Education coverage in the Lashar region is 76.63%, which is low compared to the national average of 93%. The construction of a school for grades 6-12 in the village of Kahiri in the Ahvaran district is a necessity for the development of the region. There are other reasons such as:

  • Inability of people to finance their education
  • Prejudices and prevailing culture in the region for the education of children, not least girls
  • Poor infrastructure entails a high risk of accidents during daily traffic to schools
  • The area is difficult to access, which means that girls drop out of school to a greater extent

This and many other reasons have led our experts to believe that the most effective method to increase the proportion of children who go to school is to build a boarding school for girls¬†and¬†supporting these students with YARI’s student program. This and many other reasons have led our experts to believe that the most effective method to increase the proportion of children who go to school is to build a boarding school for girls¬†and¬†support these students with YARI’s student program.

What & Why?

Yari is concerned that the school we build should be sustainable and create a safe environment for the children. Therefore, we have demanded that the building be earthquake-proof. This must be reviewed and ensured by two independent civil engineers before handover.
The school in question will consist of six year groups with six classrooms and be complete with a fenced schoolyard in which the children can play and be active.

  • Type of school: From year six to year 12 (Swedish upper secondary school and upper secondary school)
  • Six classrooms with a capacity of 30 children and a total of 450 square meters
  • Earthquake safe
  • Completely fenced schoolyard of 2500-3000 sqm
  • Dormitorium for overnight stays
  • An office for teachers
  • Storage space
  • A room for those who will take care of the school
  • 10-12 toilets of 65 square meters in total

One of the biggest challenges in the province of Sistan-Baluchestan in Iran, is the low literacy rate and student absenteeism from school.

We are on a mission to change that!
